Basic Annotation guidelines:
- Annotate the title of each chapter. What do you think the title is saying? What might it be foreshadowing?
- Annotate the setting. The setting in this novel tells us a lot about the story. Make sure you aware of the changing scenery.
- Annotate characterization. As in any novel, characters are key. Pay attention to the narrator. What do we learn about the characters? Pay attention to dialogue between characters. When characters are given physical descriptions, annotate this. Annotate characters' actions as well. You want to be able to chart the progression and development of the characters in the novel.
- Annotate symbols, motifs, and themes. Theme may not be as clear in the earlier chapters; it takes time to develop. Symbols and motifs, however, are frequent and consistent.
- Annotate specific passages that stick out to you. Why do these passages seem important? What information is being told?
- Include any general thoughts, questions, comments, or ideas you may have while reading. It's okay if your annotations don't make sense to other people. Not everyone will resonate with the same ideas. As long as your annotations make sense to you!
- At the end of each chapter, summarize what you read. You may not have enough room in the margins. You can write your summaries on a post-it and include that in your book.
